Truffles, Chestnuts, Speck, Pumpkin - Autumn"Sagre"

Finally Autumn has arrived also in the “bel paese”. Anyway there’s no need to be sad because the month of October is full of exquisite and bubbling “sagre” all through Italy.

Let’s just go through some of the most famous ones.

From October the 10th  to November the 17th , the town of Alba celebrates the most awaited event of the season, the 83rd edition of the fair of Truffle of Alba. The heart of the fair is the Truffle World Market, open Saturdays and Sundays, which includes in a single structure seekers and traders. A commission of quality control guarantees the quality of the products. The event is accompanied by pageants and events in costume.

From the 5th  to the 6th of October 2013 the appointment is in Val di Funes, where the delightful scenery of the Dolomites will be the scene of the great feast dedicated to speck ham. A special occasion to taste every kind of delicacy based on speck . 

Fond of chestnuts? Among the many events dedicated to this fruit, do not miss the National Chestnut Fair of Cuneo to be held from the 17th  to the 20th of October 2013.

This appointment attracts every year over a hundred exhibitors from all over Italy. It is also possible to taste many chestnut flavoured delicacies, such as sweets, chocolates and beer.  

Until the 8th of December, the pumpkin is the protagonist in Mantua, which for the sixteenth year has renewed the appointment with the gastronomic route “Pumpkin between culture and culture”. In the 16 “agriturismi” participating in the initiative, one can taste the pumpkin in a thousand different ways, but there will be also an exhibition with the many colours of pumpkins, it is possible to participate in many activities including cooking courses, vegetable carving lessons, courses of ceramics, culinary competitions and festivals. It is also possible to buy directly from the manufacturers and learn the secrets on how to recognize a good pumpkin.

Seven weekends full of proposals in order to fully enjoy the extra virgin olive oil from Umbria. These are the days of “open oil-mill” (frantoi aperti) in Umbria from the 1st of November to the  8th of December 2013. A journey of seven consecutive weekends  with a rich and varied program of meetings, tastings, market-exhibitions, walks, tours, music, theatre, festivals and pleasant moments of relax.

The participating municipalities are: Assisi, Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell 'Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo, Spello, Spoleto, Trevi, Valtopina.

For the most greedy, from the 18th  to the 27th of October 2013 the  Chocolate festival returns to Perugia.

In the province of Avellino from October the 6th  to the 7th , the appointment is with the 25th edition of the festival of the pig, a delicious appointment to taste the delights of ancient Irpinia. The typical Mugnanese cooking will be offered with its intense aromas and intact flavours, Pasta and beans with pork rind, penne with “tracchie”, polenta with “Salsiccione”, “graurinio” pizza, fried chops, pork rind, pig’s trotter, ears, “Cicola”, sausages, “costatelle”, roast pork and sweets. It is an opportunity not to be missed, a journey through the rediscovery of fascinating corners of history and a rich gastronomic event.

From the 4th  to the 7th October 2013 Marino Grape Festival is back in the province of Rome. It is the 89th edition of the appointment. The first edition of the festival dates back to 1923. Between shows, songs, ditties and tasting, the apex of the party arrives as always at sunset, when a fountain in the beautiful village will begin to gush good wine. 

From the 6th  to the 7th of October 2013 "Pesto e dintorni" is back to Lavagna, in the province of Genoa, in the historical centre of the town, an event dedicated to the Ligurian specialties and ingredients used in the preparation of the traditional pesto, basil, garlic, oil, salt, pine nuts, pecorino and parmesan cheese.
